CMS Adopts Employer Identification Number
As Standard Identifier In Health Transactions
CMS published a final rule in the May 31, 2002 Federal Register (67 Fed.
Reg. 38009) establishing the Employer Identification Number (EIN) as the
standard unique identifier for employers in filing and processing healthcare
transactions. Mandated by the Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), the standard unique identifier is
intended to eliminate paperwork and streamline certain activities like
enrollment and premium payment.
