D. BROWARD CRAIG: IN MEMORIAM
Published: Thursday, December 12, 2009
It is with deep regret that
the Board of Directors and members of the International Tennis Club of the United States
marks the passing of its former Secretary and President, D. Broward Craig. Broward first
joined the IC in 1950, having participated in the Prentice Cup as a member of the
Harvard-Yale Team. Thereafter, as a result of his leadership, judgment, and interpersonal
skills, he advanced the objectives of the Club both at home and abroad. He improved
communications with the members and increased dramatically the number of opportunities
for women and men to participate in international competitions. He represented the USIC
at the Council of International Clubs with integrity and diplomacy, contributing greatly
to the overall benefit of the International IC movement.
Most recently, Broward chaired the
USIC Diamond Jubilee celebration during the summer of 2008 at the Chevy Chase Club in
Washington DC. Twenty-one countries participated in the event, and enjoyed both the high
level of competition and the superb social aspects of the occassion. Broward's extraordinary
organizational talents ensured the success of this event.
Broward passed away at his home in
Charlottesville, Virginia on November 25, 2009. The Club will sorely miss his wise counsel,
leadership and good humor.
