2009 Gengler Cup
Jeanne Logan Gengler Cup
IC of Canada vs. USIC
June 13 & 14, 2009
Donalda Club, Toronto, Canada
The IC event at the picturesque Donalda Club in Toronto was a memorable
success. The weather was perfect, our hosts were gracious, the competitive
play was terrific. The special weekend began with our US team of eight
arriving from various cities on Friday afternoon. Judy Levering and Margie
Gengler Smith came in from Hilton Head, SC. Margie Cooper flew in from
Florida. Akiko Tohmatsu was in from Stoneybrook, NY. Louis Gengler flew in
from Princeton, NJ. Frances Dickenson and Julie Mitchell made the drive
from Cleveland, and Grace Woo drove from Rochester, NY.
On Friday, the American team met, many of us for the first time, at the
Donalda Club where we got a good workout and practice on their beautiful
clay courts. Pam Olley, the Canadian captain, greeted us and was the perfect
host all weekend. That evening, Team USA, Pam Olley and others from the
Canadian team got to know each other better over some white wine and a nice
dinner.
Saturday brought more temperatures in the low 70's and lots of tennis all
morning. Lunch on the Donalda Club terrace provided welcome refueling for a
full afternoon of more competitive play. We played 14 official matches and
more in exhibition as some of the Canadian men came out to join us for mixed
doubles. All great fun.
The Saturday outdoor cocktails and evening banquet, held at the Donalda Club,
was a time to relax and socialize with our hosts and our USA teammates who
by now had made many connections, new friendships, and renewed friendships.
David Dimmer of the men's IC of Canada was able to join us as were a few of
the Canadian men's players. With toasts and introductions of players, it was
a very special evening.
Sunday morning we wrapped up official play with three double matches and one
singles match. Team USA won the Gengler Cup 11 1/2 to 5 1/2. With time to
before lunch, several team members enjoyed another set of tennis. After another
delectable luncheon, we said our goodbyes and headed home. The USA win was
sweet, but the spirit of the event was what made it so special. Good fair play,
the highest degree of sportsmanship, new and renewed friendships - we did well
in accomplishing the IC motto of "international goodwill and friendships made
across the net."
Many thanks to Pam Olley and all the Canadians for such a lovely experience!
We look forward to hosting in 2010.
